Artist Statement

Time and time again, I find myself making art that screams chaos. When originally faced with this assignment, I told myself that this time around I wanted to make something that was different than my typical style, or should I just say “peaceful.” I had the idea of gathering different picture frames and placing different moving faces within them, but that just didn’t fulfill my craving to create something that makes people look twice. I had no direction with this piece but I knew I wanted to incorporate some of the tattoo designs that I am currently making for work. I figured my best option would be to go to the thrift store and look for an item that spoke to me and from there I created a narrative based on that object. After searching through a few thrift stores, I found the baby easel and figured it would be the perfect centerpiece to project onto. After searching the store for a few more items that fit the children aesthetic, I was ready to create a projected scene based on the products I was able to find. I figured an interesting topic to display would be a very deranged child’s art setup, very much like myself. I began choosing my favorite disturbing tattoo designs that I would project onto paper sheets pinned to bulletin boards. I chose around 15. After I figured out that part, I began searching the internet for any videos or gifs that would fit the theme of chaos or destruction. I quickly found many videos of building on fire such as the Notre Dame Cathedral. I figured this would be intriguing to use as the destruction of a religious building adds to the theme of a corrupted youth. From there I found more clips from chaotic moments in history such as the tanks at Tiananmen Square or Brittney Spears holding a gun to your face. All in all, I believe my final projection setup did a good job of depicting a scene of a deranged child artist. I like to relate this setup to myself as I like to believe this is what my art set-up looked like when I was a child.
